The Douglas Foundation’s endowment of $18,250,000 was awarded to the Center Theatre Group-The Kirk Douglas Theatre in support of providing access to the arts for both audiences and entertainers. The grant supported construction of the theatre and the development and production of plays and co-productions frequently reprised in other venues. The theatre’s schedule has included such coups as John Hurt’s widely praised performance in Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape and the world premieres of David Mamet’s Keep Your Pantheon and Rajiv Joseph’s Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, with Robin Williams, which then moved on to Broadway. The Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City is the newest and most intimate of the Center Theatre Group’s family of performance spaces, which include the Ahmanson Theater and the Mark Taper Forum in the downtown Los Angeles Music Center. This 317-seat theatre, located in a newly renovated historic movie house and opened in October 2004.
